The essentials
Everything worth knowing about a VAT invoice.
What must a VAT invoice include? (UK)
HMRC requires a full VAT invoice to show:
- A unique, sequential invoice number
- Your business name, address and VAT registration number
- The invoice date and the tax point (time of supply) if different
- The customer’s name and address
- A description of the goods or services, with quantity and price per unit excluding VAT
- The VAT rate and the total amount of VAT charged
- The total amount excluding VAT and including VAT
- Any discount offered
See HMRC’s detailed VAT invoice rules. Use a custom field for the tax point when it differs from the issue date. UK VAT must be expressed in sterling; this editor does not convert tax amounts between currencies. Requirements differ by country and transaction, and the generator does not validate VAT registration or submit tax returns.
